I had the same issue, ABRT reported multiple crashes per day in mate-notification-daemon. I have installed the testing repo version (mate-notification-daemon-1.12.0-2.fc23.x86_64), and compiled and run the POC code provided by Assen Totin in bugzilla 1284651. It is now working without error, images display in notifications.
