Well, looking into processes, I also saw those stopped "/usr/bin/plasmashell --shut-up" processes, but they didn't cause any logout/login problem here and could be killed easily.
Anyway, tried three times logout/login and they don't occur with "-6" for me. So, as far as I was affected, #1434870 is fixed for me.
BZ#1434870 plasma closed UNexpectedly during logout
Indeed, version 5.8.6-6 removes the bug (while 5.8.6-5 did not).
At samoht0:
I was the one who reported the bug. This is what I experienced with 5.8.6-5 (and -4) when logging off:
- screen turn black (as usual)
- subsequently the desktop appears again (though partly); at the
bottom the bar appears again ... showing me an icon, telling me
that "plasma has closed UNexpectedly"
- after some time the system recuperates itself, showing the
greeter again
- the output of "ps" shows lingering plasmashell processes (which
is normally NOT the case)
The "logoff" I was used to: screen turns black, a faint flicker of the
screen (sometimes), the greeter showing itself.
No lingering plasmashells.
All of the above made me report a bug ...

BZ#1434870 plasma closed UNexpectedly during logout
Desktop and/or notification didn't (re-)appear here. But some debug stuff (ABRT, systemd coredump) isn't installed/configured like in the fedora vanilla setup. So this might make the difference.

No improvement. The crash at logout still occurs.
