There are circular dependencies making the subpackages useless as they end up all installed. E.g. if one requires batik-css he gets batik-slideshow, batik-ttf2svg, batik-svgpp, batik-squiggle and batik-rasterizer too. I guess there is some new module in the main batik package that is due for split up.
