With an AMD Bonaire (GFX7, VCN 2nd Gen., Sea Islands) dGPU, using the radeon kernel module and this update results in a fallback to llvmpipe with the usual Gnome desktop, at least by default. This a serious performance regression, and is not really adequate. Was this intended? If so, is there a non-default configuration to work around this? Or will classes of GPUs lose access to hardware acceleration on the desktop with this update? The situation is further complicated because some AMD GPUs that can normally use both the radeon and amdgpu modules have lost access to the latter, at least temporarily, because changes to the kernel 6.13.x kernel have broken power management for amdgpu on some hardware.

Bodhi is disabling automatic push to stable due to negative karma. The maintainer may push manually if they determine that the issue is not severe.

Hi @cmorris,

Could you check if there are similar bug reports upstream and if not create one, please? https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues

For what you mentioned, this could be an issue in mesa, the kernel or both and it'd be interesting to discuss this issue upstream.

Sure, I'll report upstream, but I'd be surprised if this was an intended consequence of the cleanup in 25.x: I think something is wrong. I had expected pain for people using less featureful drivers on some embedded hardware with the upcoming move to Gnome 48, if the new GTK requirement for either Vulkan or OpenGL 3.3 is kept, but hardware that supports OpenGL 4.6 and OpenGL ES 3.2 shouldn't be downgraded to use software rendering either now or on Gnome 48. Even the older radeon kernel module with the radeonsi driver supports OpenGL 4.5 on my GPU, and ought to be more than adequate. I've older, less capable integrated Intel GPUs that are not exhibiting this problem, and I'd expect several older generations of AMD hardware that are still being worked on upstream to also work. The problem may be in other code, of course -- but my comment about the recent 6.13.x kernel regression was more of an aside, about how this problem is more difficult to avoid right now because the kernel bug is forcing some people to use the older radeon kernel module instead of the usually more capable amdgpu kernel module. But this software-rendering problem is present with the kernel 6.12.x radeon module, too.

Works great on AMD Radeon Vega 11 with Kernel 6.13.x! LGTM! =)

After upgrading to mesa-25.0.0 and restarting the system, the system boots to black screen.
Downgrading to mesa-24.3.4 resolved the problem.

Process 1559 (gnome-shell) of user 42 dumped core.

Tried it on my RX 590, works about the same as 24.3.4 in terms of usability. The only weird thing I've found so far is Minecraft still loads Mesa 24.3.4, though this could be because I'm using Prism Launcher which is a flatpak(and it probably is).

So yeah, good update. TY for the excellent work!

This utterly breaks the desktop environment on AMD A8-7600 as well: kwin-wayland uses all the CPU and goes down to about 1 fps. One of the logged errors is "libEGL warning: egl: failed to create dri2 screen". Version 24.2.4 with the same kernel (6.13.5) and Plasma 6.3 is fine.

I'll paste some log messages here for better discoverability. From journalctl -p5 | grep wayland, these warnings are fine:

@nemobis : Which kernel are you using, and which kernel module? As mentioned in:

FEDORA-2025-41b383769b https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/12660

, there are at least two separate problems. For those using some AMD GFX7 hardware -- like you -- linux kernel 6.13.x broke power management with the (non-default) amdgpu module. Then mesa 25.x broke use of the other (default) kernel module available for this hardware, the radeon module, at least with Gnome 47. However, for my GFX7 hardware, mesa 25.x still works with the amdgpu module -- just not with kernel 6.13.x and later. If you have not already done so, you should be able to test the amdgpu module by setting the kernel boot parameters radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1, or by loading the amdgpu module but disabling the radeon module.

Many changes were made in mesa 25.x. Two that may be relevant to some of our problems are the big cleanup of some old dri and glx interfaces; and various changes to the mesa radeonsi driver used by both kernel modules. Among the latter changes are the use of the ACO shader compiler, rather than that based on LLVM, on older AMD hardware (including ours):

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/commit/aaa28be0e80e8a14294df5c5d1dd3255f375c662

This is known to have some problems -- both generally, and specifically on our GFX7 hardware -- some of which may be fixed in the imminent 25.0.1 release:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/commit/cb09b3f624075e0184101800a760b98887ee1c6f

You might try reverting to LLVM on mesa 25.x with the new AMD_DEBUG=usellvm environment variable mentioned in the commit message above for aaa28... , to see if that works: unfortunately, it did not solve my problem, but I may have overlooked something, or there may still be other problems.

As for the kernel amdgpu bug on 6.13.x and later, we may have to do more digging: others in the links above claimed that a recent bug fix, which has already been backported to the upcoming kernel 6.14-rc5:

https://web.git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id=91dcc66b34beb72dde8412421bdc1b4cd40e4fb8

may close a race that leads to the power management problems with our hardware. However, I recently tested this, as found in:

FEDORA-2025-608a3d7ed2

and I am still seeing the same problems with amdgpu.
