There's no video preview. Is it supposed to be so?

When starting from terminal it's like:

$ guvcview GUVCVIEW: version 2.2.2 GUVCVIEW: not build with sfml or sdl2 support GUVCVIEW: not rendering any video preview

Otherwise it works fine.

The updated package has SDL2 support and I tested it provides video preview. Also explicitly tested that recording works. We don't currently have SFML 3.0 in Fedora therefore we cannot use it.

Regarding h264 problems - what would be the minimal reproducer? Don't think it should block the update though.

In fact in my system too when using H264 for video codec the recording was somewhat garbled, although all the other codecs I tried work fine. In terminal it did give an error: Error libav_get_encode: -541478725

But I see I have almost nothing regarding libav installed, so I'll try installing these packages (maybe also h264 related) and see if it solves this.

Well, I don't understand about this issue. I did install libavcodec but it didn't make any difference. The app does have several issues, like crashing after recording with RAW selected as video codec or, in my case, audio not in sync I think if I chose avi output. I was the one who asked in bugzilla for the update since I was totally frustrated with kamoso (which btw works only in f44 where it has an option to choose the camera and avoids v4l2, this isn't present in f43). So I though about using guvcview as a replacement. In f43 we can use a webcam app that works like GNOME's and also have camera controls with cameractl from flathub.

I think this update works well for what it's made for and the bugs could be reported upstream. But I'll install the repo stable version just to check if the issues are regressions or not.

Indeed version 2.1.0 records video with h264 without issue. But depending on the audio codec I got a crash. And with the others I had video/audio sync issues. So I don't understand about this codec subject, with both guvcview versions I only had consistent good results when saving file in webm format, when it chooses vp8 for video codec and vorbis for audio codec. Otherwise both versions had issues, a little bit different (like 2.1.0 doesn't crash after recording in RAW format but actually doesn't record anything at all and 2.2.2 does record and crashes afterwards etc.).

I would give good karma for the update, but maybe we should leave for people that understand the codec subject better.

Version 2.2.2, even with default settings, causes video and audio to become out of sync, as well as difficulties in selecting codecs for normal video quality. 2.1.0 is easier to configure to get a normal video.

Default codec MPEG4-ASP works fine with 2.10 but with 2.2.2 video and sound are not synchronized with it. VP9 has no problems with synchronization, but it loads the processor too much. The only acceptable codec for me with normal video and CPU load is MS MP4 V3.
